Our Story

People don't become harmful in a vacuum.

The Camel Project began with a simple belief: the environments we create can influence how people experience themselves, one another, and the world around them.

Bullying, violence, abuse, isolation, and other destructive behaviors often grow within environments where people don't feel seen, heard, supported, or safe.

We believe we can change that.

Through education, prevention, intervention, advocacy, and community support, The Camel Project works to recognize patterns that can lead to harm and create opportunities to change direction before those patterns become crises.

Where It Began

The Camel Project grew from a recognition that bullying is rarely an isolated behavior.

What happens between people can have consequences far beyond the original incident. Repeated humiliation, exclusion, intimidation, trauma, and unresolved conflict can affect how people see themselves and others. Without intervention, those experiences can contribute to increasingly destructive behaviors.

What if we changed the culture before the crisis?

Rather than focusing only on the behavior we can see, The Camel Project looks deeper—at relationships, environments, emotional awareness, communication, conflict, and the conditions that allow harmful behavior to take root.

From Prevention to Healing

Over time, our work has expanded beyond traditional bullying prevention.

We still teach people how to recognize bullying and respond safely. But we also help communities understand what comes before and after the behavior.

  • How do we help someone recognize what they're feeling?
  • How do we interrupt conflict without creating more trauma?
  • How do we help people develop healthier relationships?
  • How do we repair harm?
  • How do we create environments where asking for help is a strength rather than a weakness?

These questions helped shape the philosophy that guides our work today.

The Healing Culture Framework™

The Healing Culture Framework™ grew from the belief that prevention and healing belong together.

It gives individuals, schools, organizations, and communities a practical way to move from awareness toward action.

01

Discover.

What is happening.

02

Define.

The patterns, needs, and challenges.

03

Develop.

Healthier responses, relationships, and environments.

04

Defend.

The healthier culture we are creating.

The goal isn't perfection. The goal is progress—and the ability to keep moving toward healthier cultures.

Building Healing Cultures

A culture can teach people to hide pain, normalize harmful behavior, avoid difficult conversations, or simply accept that "that's the way things are."

A healing culture does something different.

It makes room for compassion without abandoning accountability. It encourages people to speak up before situations become crises. It teaches people how to recognize harm, respond to conflict, repair relationships, and support one another.

Healing cultures don't happen by accident. They're built together.

Operation Safe Lives

Today, The Camel Project brings this philosophy together through Operation Safe Lives, our umbrella initiative for the programs, activities, and community work that address prevention, intervention, healing, and safer environments.

Our programs provide different pathways into this work—from community outreach and education to training, healing, and behavior awareness.

Together, they reflect one larger purpose: changing the conditions that can lead toward harm while creating environments where people can learn, heal, connect, and thrive.

Where We're Going

Our work continues to evolve because the challenges facing people continue to evolve.

But our purpose remains consistent:

Changing the Culture Before It Becomes a Tragedy.

We believe every conversation is an opportunity to begin. Every relationship is an opportunity to build connection. And every community has an opportunity to create something healthier.

Healing people.
Healthy relationships.
Stronger communities.
Brighter futures.
